Mazda RX-8

The Wankel engine didn't really catch on.  NSU (who were swallowed up by Audi) and Mazda kept at it, but the engines tended to be thirsty and unreliable.  It popped up again in the gorgeous Mazda RX-8.  With it's "suicide" doors, opening at front and rear of car rather than the usual, modern configuration and wheel arches that hinted at vintage automobiles it was a retro-modern design success.
